ABSTRACT:

There is an increasing demand for high performance buildings in today’s market.  Green building certification programs and city by-laws are pushing buildings to meet lower energy consumption targets.  This presentation explores the relationship between the building enclosure and mechanical systems. By considering the way these systems interact, designers may able to achieve these targets more readily.

This session will give a history of how heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system design has traditionally been approached, the factors involved, and how this approach has led to the types of systems that are often used in buildings today; from typical constant/variable air volume systems to modern, low-energy, options such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems. A focus on the building envelope will then illustrate how heating and cooling loads in a building are effected by envelope design, and how these loads play a role in the selection of HVAC systems. This session will demonstrate that high performance building designs are more easily achieved when architects and engineers work collaboratively.

Biography:    Eric is an Energy and Sustainability Analyst at RDH Building Science Inc. and has been working as a consultant in the green building industry since 2011.  He studied civil engineering at McMaster University where his Masters research focused on the energy modelling and assessment of government office buildings. He specializes in the evaluation of energy efficiency measures in buildings and enjoys working closely with design teams to help create energy efficient buildings. He has simulation experience with various modelling tools/services, and has worked on a variety of different building types, including hospitals, office buildings, laboratories, residential buildings and recreational facilities.
